This slightly scholarly and very unique cookbook was inspired by the love of food, family, and midwifery. Born of a desire to expand cultural awareness, sensitivity, and humility, 29 diverse groups are represented in this cookbook. Midwifery students and faculty selected a culture to explore through professional journals, web-based resources, and discussions with members of the chosen culture. In many cases, there was a direct link with the culture, either through professional or personal connections.

Cultural beliefs and preferences around food choices are important during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. Food fuels the body and provides the building blocks for fetal growth, maternal health, and breastfeeding success. There are many prescriptions and prohibitions on what foods women may or may not eat before, during, and after pregnancy Dietary preferences often reflect recipes handed down through the years within a culture. The area for food preparation and consumption is a meeting place in the home for family and guests, whether in a contemporary gourmet kitchen or an open hearth in a rural landscape. This cookbook will pique the interest of midwives and childbearing women regarding their counterparts across the world while providing practical and palatable recipes designed to nourish women’s bodies at a time when nutrition is critical to positive health outcomes.

The best way to explore a culture is through its food.

We invite you to have a multicultural meal with a midwife that nourishes body and spirit, mother and baby.

This professional clinical reference is the first to comprehensively address the escalating crisis in U.S. maternal health—our country experiences the highest maternal mortality among developed nations—and provides strategies and roadmaps for improved outcomes. It challenges the current approach to ameliorating the maternal crisis, which embeds maternal care into “child health” and ”women’s health,” and characterizes maternal health as a distinct, contemporary epidemiological crisis in America.

Nitrous oxide has long been used as an analgesia in dentistry, and there has been a recent resurgence of interest in using it in obstetrics as well. This guide offers practical, easy-to-follow advice for midwives and anyone else involved in childbirth who wants to add nitrous oxide to their pain management toolbox. The guide not only covers the practical steps that need to be taken for nitrous oxide to be used safely and effectively in a variety of practice environments, but it also offers suggestions for how to engage all relevant stakeholders, respond to the myths surrounding nitrous oxide use, and allay concerns that will inevitably arise.

The Home Birth Practice Manual, 3rd Edition

This new edition of the Home Birth Practice Manual is updated, augmented, reorganized, and divided into 3 sections: clinical, structural, and contextual. The clinical section addresses the processes and tasks of home birth midwifery practice. The structural section provides information about the business elements involved in creating, managing, and sustaining a home birth practice. The contextual section provides a historical perspective and a review of the current evidence on home birth. For midwifery education programs and students, a chapter is included on home birth curriculum and clinical experience. The enhanced appendices provide sample documents that can be adapted for use in individual home birth practices.

Midwives are encouraged to use this book not only as a guide for their own practices, but also as a tool to educate and promote a better understanding of the benefits and limitations of safe home birth as a part of the total health care system in the United States.

The Home Birth Practice Manual represents a collaborative effort to make a wealth of information in a useful reference tool available for the following:
